Rehome

Life is unpredictable.  When you purchased your puppy or adopted your dog, you intended to provide care for the rest of his or her life.  Instead, you are facing a situation where you are unable to keep your dog.  It might be a new baby, an illness, a divorce, a move, or the loss of a job.  Many things can contribute to the need to rehome your dog.  We may be able to help.  Please complete the Owner Surrender Form and provide as much information as possible.  We'll review it and contact you to discuss your dog and situation in more detail.  Sometimes, we can provide training or management information that will enable you to keep your pet.  Every situation is different, and we're here to help you make the right rehoming decision for you and your dog.

FAQ: Rehome

Can my dog stay with me while you are finding a new home for it?

In most cases, your dog will go to an approved foster home while we are finding a new owner for it.  Occasionally, if there is a shortage of foster homes, you may be asked to foster the dog that you are surrendering to MARS.

I would like to visit my dog in its new home. Would that be possible?

No.  We protect the privacy of our adopters, and we do not permit post-adoption visits by the surrendering owner.

Will the new owners know who I am? I don't want them to contact me.

Vet records have all identifying information removed prior to them being received by an adopter.

I love my dog a lot, and it's very hard to have to rehome him. Is it possible to get periodic updates on him?

We would be happy to let you know how your dog is doing.  Just send an email message to the Area Coordinator, and s/he will let you know how things are going.  Please remember that the Area Coordinator is a volunteer, so use discretion in how often you seek updates.

How can I know that you will find a good home for my dog?

We treat the placement of a foster dog as though it were our own dog that was being rehomed.  Adopters must go through a comprehensive adoption process prior to meeting and adopting a dog.  You can review the adoption process and look at our Adopter Info Form by clicking on the tab for Adopt.
